Ear Wax Removal Procedure

"Microsuction involves the use of a vacuum suction probe to break up and extract impacted cerumen. Microsuction can be preferred over other methods as it avoids the presence of moisture in the ear, is often faster than irrigation, and is performed with direct vision of the earwax being removed" [J Radford, British Journal of General Practice]

What is Microsuction?

Ear wax microsuction is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove excess ear wax from the ear canal. This technique uses a small suction device to gently extract the wax buildup from the ear without causing discomfort or damage to the ear drum. Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is a natural substance that helps to protect and lubricate the ear canal. However, when too much ear wax accumulates, it can cause hearing problems, pain, and even infection. Ear wax microsuction is a safe and effective way to address these issues and restore clear hearing. It is typically performed by a trained audiologist or ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist.

FAQs

Can you remove wax from my childs ear?

🔞No. We serve over 18's only.

Does ear microsuction hurt?

Not usually, however, it can be noisy and your ear canal skin is sensitive so we do everything we can to avoid touching it with the suction end.

If you have had a lot of wax removed, it can sometimes leave the ear sensitive to cold weather and winds, so is advisable to keep the ear protected.

Do I have to use ear drops before you come to see me?

Yes please, if you are able to use some Olive Oil drops or spray in your ears for at least three days before your appointment it will help to soften the wax. This makes it easier for us to remove it all and makes the treatment more comfortable for you. If you need to see us urgently or there is a reason you are unable to use ear drops in your ears, please contact us for further advice.

I have had ear problems or surgery in the past, is microsuction safe for me?

Definitely, microsuction is the safest way to clean your ear because it is performed under direct vision through the microscope, which gives us a magnified view of what is going on. Ear syringing should be avoided if you have had previous surgery on your ears.

I have Cotton Swabs at Home, shall I use those?

Cotton swabs push most of the earwax farther into the ear canal and remove only a small portion of the top layer of wax that happens to adhere to the fibers of the swab. We do not recommend the use of cotton swabs.
